The Islamic Cultural Center of Niagara Falls has made a preliminary application to the Town of Wheatfield Planning Board to build a new center at the site of Suzanne Fine Dining and Banquet Hall at 2483 Niagara Falls Blvd.
The Islamic Cultural Center of Niagara Falls serves both as a community center and Mosque, or place of worship for Muslims and is directed by Dr. Mohammad Salem Agwa, a PhD from Al-Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt.
Aside from his duties as the local Imam, or prayer leader, Agwa teaches courses in Arabic Language and Culture at Niagara University.
"The Masjid is open for daily prayers as well as community enrichment. Classes in Arabic Language, culture, and Islamic History are taught Fridays & Sundays for men, women, and children. Family and Marital Counseling is also offered by appointment." Its website states.
On October 1, according to the Town of Wheatfield published online schedule, representatives of the Islamic Cultural Center presented a sketch of their proposed center before the planning board, the first step toward getting planning approval.
The property is currently zoned commercial and Suzanne's has been operating there since 1995, when it was established by Kevin and Suzanne Guenther as a casual, upscale restaurant. In 2002, Suzanne's opened a banquet facility.
Since the Islamic Cultural Center is a not for profit, it would likely mean the property would go off the tax rolls, much like any church or temple.
According to their website, the Islamic Cultural Center of Niagara Falls has an open door policy and non Muslims may visit and learn about Islam.
The Islamic Cultural Center of Niagara Falls was registered on March 17, 2005 and is currently located at 1801 Pierce Ave in Niagara Falls. |
