Wheatfield Reader Loves Dyster's New Canoe Launch

JUNE 23, 2015

Canoeing and kayaking can be fun, but please do not venture out too far into the Niagara River as this unidentified woman did.

Long time reader of your paper but I'm going to disagree with your article concerning the new kayak/canoe launch at Griffon park. My wife and I are avid kayakers and just this past Sunday utilized the new launch.

We've been using the nearby boat docks for years; and you're right, that launch point is adequate.

However, almost every kayaker will tell you, the ADA put ins are far superior and given the choice would without a doubt use those instead.

They are easier, safer and water entry is gained more quickly.

As for the river current, we found the water in that location to be like glass; if anything the current moves you away from the mouth of the Niagara river, it was a non-issue. Time will tell if this launch site is heavily used; however I will say that at almost every other similar ADA site we've used in WNY including those on the Buffalo waterfront, long lines form on the weekend awaiting their turn to roll into the water.
