(Niagara Falls, NY) - The African American Male Wellness Walk Initiative is proud to announce Roswell Park Cancer Institute’s Dr. Willie Underwood, MD, MS, MHS as the Honorary Chairman for the First Annual African American Male Wellness Walk/Run in Niagara Falls, NY.
The African American Wellness Walk is the largest health initiative for African Americans in the state of Ohio. Governor John Kasich has proclaimed August 2015 as African American Male Wellness Month. Moving across the nation, the walk initiative will be held in seven cities; Columbus, OH; Toledo, OH; Youngstown OH; Niagara Falls, NY; Detroit, Michigan; Washington D.C. and Silver Springs, MD.
On March 21, 2015 Mayor Paul A. Dyster accepted Columbus City Mayor Michael B. Coleman’s challenge to support the walk in Niagara Falls, NY. This inaugural event will take place on July 18th, 2015 in City of Niagara Falls.
This year’s theme, “Healthy Men Make Healthy Families,” is geared towards improving health and wellness within the urban community by providing educational resources that will empower men and their families. Expecting more than 4,000 participants, this event will be held at Niagara Arts & Cultural Center located at 1201 Pine Avenue, Niagara Falls, NY 14301. A fun filled day of free screenings, education and empowerment for the entire family. Men will be encouraged to take charge of their health by bringing their family together in unity for the cause of good health, well being, awareness and prevention. The Kid’s Area is also a highlight of the Walk activities along with over 25 vendors on the Pavilion to distribute information to the community.
The Walk Day events include:
1. Free health screenings at 7:00am for men, women and children
2. Adult 5K Walk/Run begins at 9:00am; Kid’s Walk @ 11am
3. Free Historical Site Give-A-Ways from Niagara Falls National Heritage Area
4. Gospel Festival 2015 Immediately following the Walk Activities
