In 2003, a beautiful ceremony was held and hundreds attended, all in the honor of the brave men and women who served in the military to protect our freedoms. As a token of appreciation, one that could never equal their sacrifice, the Town of Niagara dedicated our park and named it, "Veterans Memorial Park." The stunning beauty of this park was the least we could do to say thank you to all those who have served, and it even won significant state-wide recognition as a result. Currently, we use this park to play baseball, bocce, attend concerts, and fishing contests. The family oriented atmosphere that this park embodies, is precisely the tribute deserved to the men and women who served.
In a recent town workshop meeting, Supervisor Wallace and Board Member Danny Skalarski, proposed a re-dedication of the park, another chance for the Town to recognize the commitment of our military members. A very fitting measure and one I truly support. However, I was upset when I heard certain board members wanted to reconsider the name and strip the park of its tribute. In my opinion, our park was rightfully named Veterans Memorial Park and it is a very fitting tribute, I thank Supervisor Wallace and Board Member Skalarski for their commitment. Stripping the park of its name would not only be a slap in the face to the men and women of our military, it would fly against the master plan of the park which includes a statuette to honor those in our community and families that have served. For these reasons, I support Veterans Memorial Park and say thank you to all those who have or are serving in the military.
