Organizers for SummerFest at the Sal, an all-day concert and car show, announced the 2020 event’s cancellation due to the COVID-19 restrictions on large groups. The 4th annual event was slated to be held on August 23 at Sal Maglie Stadium, Hyde Park, with proceeds to benefit the Niagara Falls Firefighters Christmas Toy Fund.

Kenny Tompkins, Chairman of SummerFest at the Sal, said, “This was a heart-wrenching decision to make. We held off as long as possible, hoping that since this is an outdoor event that naturally lends itself to social distancing, we’d still be able to host it in a modified form. Unfortunately, there were still too many concerns and we felt in the interest of community safety, this was the best option.”

Niagara Falls City Councilman Ken Tompkins

Tompkins noted that since the concert/car show was launched in 2017, SummerFest at the Sal has raised over $36,000 for the fund, which is used to purchase toys for underserved children here in Niagara Falls. “The main reason we waited to cancel was we kept thinking about the kids,” he said. “It’s fun to listen to the bands and check out the classic cars and bikes. But at the end of the day, what really mattered was we were working towards a worthy cause.”

While Tompkins and the SummerFest at the Sal committee look forward to returning in 2021, they strongly encourage those who would have attended to still donate to the Niagara Falls Firefighters Christmas Toy Fund. “This year, more than ever, we need to do what we can spread joy to kids in need,” he said. “No doubt, there will be more kids on that list. We want to do all that we can to make spirits bright in 2020.”
