Sheriff Michael J. Filicetti announced the promotion of Chief Deputy Michael P. Dunn to the rank of Undersheriff effective November 29, 2020.

Undersheriff Dunn is a graduate of Rochester Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice. He was hired at the sheriff’s office as a road patrol deputy in March of 2001. While attending the Niagara County Law Enforcement Academy, he received the Academic Excellence award and the Overall Outstanding Recruit Award. Undersheriff Dunn was promoted to sergeant in 2008 and again to captain in 2011. Additionally he served in the administrative captain role before being promoted to chief deputy in July of 2015.

His career includes being a member of the emergency response team and serving as the team commander. The undersheriff also spent many years on the accident investigation unit of the sheriff’s office. During his tenure as chief deputy he acquired grant writing skills that proved useful in securing much needed funding for the sheriff’s office.

Sheriff Filicetti said, “Undersheriff Dunn will hit the ground running with the experience he has amassed at the sheriff’s office. He has built a thorough working knowledge of many facets of our agency and I know he will be successful in his new role. In appointing an undersheriff I sought out the individual I believe has the same vision for this office and the skills to get us there. I am also confident that he shares the same love of the sheriff’s office, care for the men and women that work here and ability to keep our citizens safe. I am very comfortable having Undersheriff Dunn as my second in command as we move the sheriff’s office forward.”

He resides in Newfane with his wife and three children.
