Wound Center of Niagara Announces Medical Team at Opening Ceremony

The Wound Center of Niagara introduced a multidisciplinary team of nine physicians who will direct patient care at the new comprehensive wound care facility during ribbon cutting ceremonies held today.

The center is located at 620 10th St., Suite 700 - directly across the street from Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center. Scheduled to open Tuesday (Nov.12), it was developed by Memorial and RestorixHealth, one of the nation's leaders in comprehensive wound care and wound management programs.

The center's medical team will be led by Dr. Michael J. Mitchell, a general and vascular surgeon and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

"Using leading-edge technologies, the team at Niagara Falls Memorial is completely devoted to healing problem wounds and to helping restore overall health," Dr. Mitchell said.

Wound Center of Niagara physicians better understand the underlying conditions that can cause problem wounds because of their various areas of specialty.

Joining Dr. Mitchell on the Wound Center of Niagara's medical staff are:

Dr. Rajinder Bajwa - Internist and Infectious Disease specialist

Dr. Russell Carlson - Cardiothoracic Surgeon

Dr. Mark Jajkowski - Cardiothoracic Surgeon

Dr. Venkat Kolli - General Surgeon and Memorial's Chief of Surgery

Dr. Michael Merletti - Podiatry

Dr. Theodore Merletti - Podiatry

Dr. Kumar Shah - Internist and Hospitalist

Dr. Richard Sawicki - Podiatry

"Besides having the only diabetes and endocrinology center in the area, Memorial has the skilled medical specialists necessary to support a robust, comprehensive wound care program," Memorial President & CEO Joseph A. Ruffolo said.

Wound centers specialize in treating chronic or problem wounds, typically those that fail to respond to conventional treatment within 30 days. They are often

associated with medical conditions such as diabetes, poor circulation and certain types of infection.

The Wound Center of Niagara provides comprehensive wound treatment, including the use of hyperbaric oxygen chambers to deliver oxygen under pressure. This stimulates tissues and helps wounds heal more quickly.

The center is accepting new patients. For information or to schedule an appointment, please call 278-4424.
