Grandinetti Rushes to Defense of Planned Parenthood in Controversy

By Mike Hudson

JULY 21, 2015

Kristen Grandinetti in the garb of an angel. Do aborted babies become angels or are they fetal tissue?

Never let it be said that Niagara Falls city Councilwoman Kristen Grandinetti is one to run away from a fight. Last week, as her beloved Planned Parenthood came under fire after a secretly recorded video conversation with the organization’s medical director went viral, Grandinetti waded in with both feet.

The controversy erupted over whether the nation’s largest provider of abortions is profiting from the sale of fetal tissue. The video has caused many, including those who support a woman’s right to choose, Dr. Deborah Nucatola, Planned Parenthood’s senior director of medical research, eats salad, sips wine and talks casually and graphically about harvesting fetal tissue to two actors posing as buyers for a fetal tissue procurement company.

“I’d say a lot of people want liver,” Nucatola says between forkfuls of salad. “And for that reason, most providers will do this case under ultrasound guidance, so they’ll know where they’re putting their forceps. The kind of rate-limiting step of the procedure is the calvarium, the head is basically the biggest part. Most of the other stuff can come out intact,”

At another point, she throws out a price range – “$30 to $100 depending on the facility, and what’s involved” – for specimens.

Grandinetti won Planned Parenthood's 2009 William B. Hoyt Advocacy for Choice Award for "outstanding public commitment and integrity to the preservation of reproductive freedom and women's rights."

Since the summer of 2011, Grandinetti hosted an all-you-can eat alcohol and dance party to raise money for Planned Parenthood. The event, called "Rockin' for Choice," has raised thousands for the organization, which operates clinics that performed 327,166 abortions in 2012-2013, and receives $540 million in federal taxpayer dollars annually.

Planned Parenthood has donated to Grandinetti's past political campaigns.

While Grandinetti supporters have argued that Planned Parenthood and abortion have nothing to do with being a city council member and the issue shouldn’t be part of the local political debate, the councilwoman worked in 2009 to give taxpayer dollars - through the city Community Development Department - to the Planned Parenthood office in Niagara Falls. Based on this fact alone it would be reasonable to expect Grandinetti to blend her reproductive politics and her elected position in the future.

Since the video was first released by the conservative Breitbart blog, Grandinetti has posted no fewer than eight times about it, including one link to an article in the liberal Mother Jones magazine that is headlined, “Conservatives Are Going Nuts About This Planned Parenthood ‘Sting’ Video – But It’s Bullshit.”

Another link provided by Grandinetti is for a Youtube video realeased by Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards, who apologizes on behalf of the organization for Nucatola’s cavalier attitude toward the unborn.

"Our top priority is the compassionate care that we provide. In the video, one of our staff members speaks in a way that does not reflect that compassion. This is unacceptable, and I personally apologize for the staff member's tone and statements," said Richards, the group's president. "As always, if there is any aspect of our work that can be strengthened, we want to know about it, and we take swift action to address it."

For her part, Grandinetti seems to think that no apology is necessary.

“If you are someone who is quick to believe the worst at least take a moment and hear the truth,” she wrote.

But what is the truth? Art Caplan, a bioethicist at New York University, has called attention to a part in the video where Nucatola describes doctors using ultrasound to know where to grab the fetus to preserve certain organs. Says Nucatola: "We've been very good at getting heart, lung, liver because we know that, I'm not going to crush that part."

"In abortion the primary goal is to give the safest abortion possible. Your sole concern has to be the mother and her health." Kaplan said. “By contrast, Nucatola gives the impression that Planned Parenthood is modifying the way that a termination is carried out to pass on the tissue and that's hugely unethical.”

Planned Parenthood's founder, Margaret Sanger, was an early 20th century proponent of sterilization for the lower classes be sterilized.

In 1925, in a speech in New York, Sanger said parenthood should be legal for people who are 23 years or older and that there must be a "space out between births." Parenthood should not be permissible if there are "subnormal children already in the family," she said.

"We (must) lay all our emphasis upon stopping not only the reproduction of the unfit," Sanger said, "but upon stopping all reproduction when there is not economic means of providing proper care for those who are born in health."

Sanger believed government should decide who is "unfit and undesirable." In Sanger's article, "Birth Control: Yes or No," published in Fairplay on Sept. 20, 1919, she wrote, "The supply of defectives should be cut off at the source (i.e. birth control, sterilization etc.)... To use public funds needlessly for the care of the unfit instead of for education and opportunity for the normal is criminal stupidity."

Grandinetti is a kindergarten teacher for the Niagara Falls City School District whose primary interests seem to be sexual politics and the advancement of her own often controversial positions about them on her Facebook page.

Over the past year or so she has accused her employer, the school district, of criminal negligence in its’ choice of a sex education curriculum, championed the raising of the rainbow hued Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender flag over the Niagara Falls City Hall and posted a video depicting a group of prepubescent girls repeatedly using the f-word in order to make some point about feminism.

And after winning reelection in 2013, Grandinetti used her Facebook page to launch a harshly critical condemnation of the Roman Catholic Church because of its policies towards women and gays, and announce her conversion to Episcopalianism.

Someday perhaps, when lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender children are free to utter the f-word in the Protestant church of their choice, when the sale of dead human fetuses raises no more of an eyebrow than the sale fish fillets or corn in a can and when American soldiers march into battle beneath the passive pastels of the Rainbow flag, Grandinetti’s work will be done.

But not a minute before.
