Vicki Lawrence heads for Riviera Theater

Comedienne Vicki Lawrence, best known for her co-starring role on The Carol Burnett Show, from 1967 to 1978, and as Thelma Harper/"Mama" television series Mama's Family, from 1983 to 1990, will appear in "Vicki Lawrence and Mama: A Two Woman Show” at the Riviera Theatre in North Tonawanda for two shows on Tuesday, May 14, at 2pm and 8pm..

The ratings for the “Carol Burnett Showstopper Special,” which had some 50 million viewers, convinced Lawrence, she said, that the time is right to take Mama out of the closet, and produce a touring show with Lawrence playing herself and her character "Mama."

Lawrence will take the stage first.

“My show will not be a retrospective,” she explained. “The show is a mixture of stand-up comedy, music and my observations about real life.”

While Lawrence is mostly known for her comedic talents, she earned a gold record for the 1973 number one hit, “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia.”

“I think people will get a kick out of the things Mama has an opinion about,” Lawrence said. “We’re creating new material with a more modern and cutting edge. Where Mama is concerned, expect the unexpected. That crazy old gal will be up to the challenge.”

Call the theatre box office for tickets at 692-2413.  Tickets are priced at $37 and $47.The theatre website is: www.rivieratheatre.org.
