Reporter in the press

The Olean Times Herald published a story based on an investigative story by The Niagara Falls Reporter on conditions at the Cattaraugus County SPCA and a protest held there by Morgan Dunbar, special correspondent for the Reporter. Below is the online version of the Times Herald Story.

SPCA Again Under Scrutiny

By Christopher Michel

Olean Times Herald

OLEAN — The SPCA of Cattaraugus County is again facing allegations of animal cruelty and financial impropriety.

At around 2:30 p.m., approximately a dozen protesters stood along the shoulder of Route 16 in front of the shelter holding signs that read “Animals Suffer Here,” “Misappropriation of Funds,” and “SPCA Board: Blame Yourselves.”

The protest was organized by Morgan Dunbar, director of Animal Allies of Western New York and a journalist with the Niagara Falls Reporter. Ms. Dunbar recently had an investigative piece published in the “Reporter” in which she described her experience at the local SPCA shelter during a visit late last week.

In Ms. Dunbar’s article, she writes that many animals at the shelter appeared to be sick or left to languish in kennels. In addition, her story includes interviews with former volunteers and board members who make claims of animal abuse. Ms. Dunbar’s story is accompanied by an 18-minute video that Ms. Dunbar told Times Herald she filmed during her visit. The video allegedly shows several dogs and cats in poor condition at the shelter.
