Some Clips From Residents of Lewiston Road

Here is a sampling of comments from various residents at the Lewiston Road meeting. Their names have been omitted since they were not speaking specifically on the record.

Resident #1: I think it’s not just a messed up construction project. It is a health problem.

Resident #2: I don’t think there is a health problem. If there is, I would probably move.

Resident #3: Our address was singled out as one of the ones that was a “very hot spot.” The DEC report that came back to me [read] to receive a radiation dose in excess of the current regulatory limit, a person would have to stand on that portion of my driveway for approximately 12 hours a day 365 days a year… You would get more radiation from going to your dentist and having an x-ray than from the radiation on my property.

Resident #4: The Great Lakes Environmental Reports were there every single day as they opened up the trenches with directional issue tools. Where are those tools? They are not accessible. They went up to an organization and finally to the people in Albany and they don’t even have them, so I think it is a general incompetence.

Resident #5: I think as long as the (contractor) could make money on the overages (he stayed) and when the money for the overages went away, the contractor went away.

Resident #6: I have a concern because of the work that has already been done and sealed up. I would like to know if there was any quality control over what Pfieffer actually did in the amount of work that was already produced.

Resident #7: I used to teach Radiology for 33 years and I told the mayor there are some radiation levels that are 20 times above the normal radiation background that you should be subjected to and that is one meter above the surface of the road. I still think this is a by-product of the Federal Government and the Federal Government should have been involved in the first place. I do not know of any industry locally that, as a by-product of the manufacturing process, has produced Irradium 238.

Resident #8: There is some phosphorus produced as by-products of the fertilizer and other industries. There is a 30-page report that exists with extensive maps that names a phosphorus producing (harmless) slag product.

Resident #9: My business is on Lewiston Road and I need to worry about it being unsafe. There are holes people can fall into; there are stones that can fall onto cars in the next couple of months and it makes my business unsafe. In my opinion that is the contractor's responsibility and I don’t understand how you can just walk away and leave it unsafe.

Resident #10: Do you remember what happened to those people in Love Canal? We need to take a stand.

Resident #11: I believe radioactive material is (falsely) clouding this issue. This is a construction project gone wrong. These materials were a known thing in this area since the 70’s and they are being put forth as an unknown. It’s the source of how Mr. Pfeiffer is trying to lead this thing off and get reinstalled on this project.

Resident #12: What about the sensor information from various points of the construction project? None of those results are available.
