MEMORIAL APPOINTS EXPERT ON MEDICAL TOURISM

Niagara University professor, Shawn Daly named to Finance Committee.
Memorial’s rise in recent years prompted the board to appoint expert in medical tourism, Dr. Shawn P. Daly.

Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center has appointed Shawn P. Daly, PhD, the dean of the College of Business Administration at Niagara University, to serve on its Finance Committee.

Dr. Daly is former dean of the H-E-B School of Business and Administration at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Tex. He earned a doctorate in international business from Temple University and master’s degrees from Loyola University, Villanova and Virginia Tech.

Memorial is the largest of Niagara County's five hospitals, with 30,000 yearly emergency room visits, 4,500 admissions, 120,000 outpatient visits and more than 1,100 employees.

The hospital operates without any dedicated tax levy for its support.

"Patient revenues support the facility,” said hospital CEO and President Joseph Ruffolo.

The hospital is owned by the residents of Niagara Falls and managed by a board of directors.

The Memorial Medical Center Finance Committee is appointed by the board to monitor financial performance and reporting.
The committee makes recommendations to the board that will protect its financial viability and the community’s investment in the hospital.

Dr. Daly is the winner of two Fulbright scholarships, and has lectured extensively on medical tourism, business-to-business marketing, and business education.

Medical tourism is a term used to describe the growing practice of patients traveling to obtain health care. Memorial’s strides during the past decade to secure top physicians and cutting-edge technologies have made it increasingly attractive for out-of-town patients to seek medical services here. Typically, medical tourism patients seek elective procedures as well as specialized surgeries.
