Facts of American life: Lawyers and prisoners

With 1,143,358 lawyers and a population of 303 million, there is one lawyer for every 265 citizens in the USA. That is the highest ratio in the world.

With 2,300,000 people in prison, or one person for every 131 people in the USA, that too is the highest ratio. With only four percent of the world’s population, the USA has 25 percent of the world’s prison population.

There are two people in prison for every lawyer in America.

Is there a correlation between the number of lawyers and the number of people in cages?

Do we need more lawyers because our citizens are, proportionately, the worst in the world? Or, because there are too many lawyers, there are, consequently, too many laws and an obsession with laws. Did a profitable prison industry arise not because the people are more evil than every other country in the world, but because there are so many who depend on laws and their enforcement? Was there a demand to create more laws and fund more enforcement that criminalizes more Americans only to support the growing lawyer, law enforcement, prison industry cabal?

Which is the cause and which the effect?

Are the people bad or is it the need to find victims to support a burgeoning legal industry?
