What about paying unique
couples to move into Niagara
Falls? That could promote
economic development. |
Since the plan to pay college graduates people to move into got so much praise from the media, we did a sampling across the nation, taking names off the internet white directory phone book and asking some people we knew and many we didn’t, the same four questions.
Now we want to make it clear, this is no poll or scientific survey. We were just interested in comments:
Have you heard about the city of Niagara Falls plan to pay “young professionals” (college graduates with student loan debt) to move into the city in certain neighborhoods downtown to revitalize them and help maintain city population level required for receiving federal government financial assistance and incentives?
More than 50 percent of the people we contacted heard of the program.
T. Franklin (Buffalo, N.Y.) was one who did not. He said, “No. But the place is a cesspool and I wouldn’t live there even if they did pay me. Bye.”
Mike M of Orlando said, “Yes. I heard about it. I was amazed Niagara Falls was under 50,000. It shocked me.”
Sally B. (Kentucky)
Yes, of course I have heard. I am a libertarian and believe that all taxation is theft and our government does it all of the time.
When people who heard about the bold plan and thought it was a neat idea realized that they were paying for it, their good feelings about the plan began to evaporate.
We asked this question: What do you think about your federal tax dollars paying for this plan?
Mark K. (Valley Stream, N.Y.) said, “No, and no city, county or state should be allowed to do it.”
S. Valenzuela (Calif.) said, “I don’t like it and I think we should all be outraged, but most people will never know.”
S. R. of Fort Wayne, Ind., said “I think it’s a terrible use of tax dollars.”
Monica D of Key West, Fla., said, “I'm a liberal. I'm all for it. I'm up for kids going to places to try to revitalize it.”
Should other cities (in Kansas, Nebraska) also be allowed to choose whom they believe “desirable” (young professionals, college graduates) for such a program?
Susan C. (Philadelphia, Pa.) It sounds very Nazi-like.
Janet N. (Miami, Fla.) said, “Their government is confused and doesn’t really know what to do.
What do you think about Niagara Falls after hearing this?
Most said they would still visit the falls.
Mike from Orlando made an excellent point: “They have one of the wonders of the world, and didn’t do anything about it. In Orlando, it’s just swamp land. Look at what we did. We get 40 million tourists a year and got them to spend money. If Walt Disney, a private company can do this on swamp land, with one of the wonders in your back yard, if you can do nothing, the government is screwed up! No, you’re screwed up.”
But J. A. of Niagara Falls summed it up with, “Stupid is as stupid does.” |
