"SAL" the Robot completes 100th surgery

Operating room staff members at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center joined board member Nancy Gara, front row center, and Chief of Robotic Surgery Donna Azam Feldman, M.D., first row right, on Friday to celebrate “SAL” the Surgical Robot’s 100th surgery at the medical center.  The milestone operation was performed by obstetrician/gynecologist Dr. Roger Jammal.

“SAL,” which stands for Save A Life, is actually the da Vinci® Si™ Surgical System.  Specially trained surgeons began using SAL in March and the system is now utilized by more than a dozen gynecologists, gynecological oncologists, urologists, colorectal surgeons and general surgeons to perform minimally invasive robotic surgery at Memorial.

The $1.7 million da Vinci Si System gives Memorial’s patients access to the most effective, least invasive surgical treatment option available today.  For more information, call Memorial’s Minimally Invasive Robotic Surgery Hotline at (716) 278-4492 or visit www.nfmmc.org/Services/daVinci

Memorial to provide for Dr. Bennett’s patients

Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center announced that it will be providing primary care services to former patients of Dr. Matthew A. Bennett.

Memorial is working with its primary care providers to ensure those patients have timely access to health care services and are provided with reliable, quality care.

The medical center is working with the landlord to reopen the North Tonawanda office that housed Dr. Bennett’s practice, pending state Department of Health approval. In the interim, as a temporary measure, patient appointments will be scheduled at the Summit Family Health Center in Suite 500 of the Summit Healthplex on Williams Road, Wheatfield.

“The sudden closing of a large primary care practice creates significant hardship for patients and for the community.  Our goal is to assure the availability and continuity of quality preventive and primary care services,” Memorial President & CEO Joseph A. Ruffolo said.

“We are in the process of notifying patients that their medical records are in our custody,” he added. “Patients can be assured that their records will be treated with the utmost confidentiality throughout this process.”

To schedule an appointment, patients should call 278-4499.

Dr. Bennett, a North Tonawanda physician was arrested Aug. 10  by federal agents. The DEA alleged he wrote prescriptions for addictive painkillers and other drugs to almost anyone coming to his North Tonawanda office, without performing a medical exam. Sometimes, he allegedly wrote prescription in exchange for packages of paper towels or toilet paper, authorities said.

Memorial Medical Center will be Rockin’ the Park

Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center will celebrate summer in the city by Rockin’ the Park at Schoellkopf Park from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 23.

The free outdoor concert will feature music by The A-List Band with food specials provided by the Hard Rock Café from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.  The public is invited.

“This summer celebration is one of the ways we share this beautiful park with all our neighbors and thank the community for its steadfast support,” said Ann Marie Tucker, Memorial’s vice president for foundation and community relations.

Formed in June 2006, The A-List Band covers songs from six decades with a playlist that ranges from ’60s classic rock and ’70s disco to the hits of the 90's and today.  The popular band performs more than 100 shows a year.

Schoellkopf Park, located adjacent to Schoellkopf Health Center on the eastern end of Niagara Falls Memorial’s downtown campus, was built in 1913 and was restored to its former majesty in a $630,000 makeover that was completed in 2008.

Designed by award-winning landscape architect Joy Kuebler, it now looks much as it did nearly a century ago.

For information about Rockin’ the Park, call 278-4570 or visit www.nfmmc.org/events.
